Magista is a true specialist when it comes to museum storage. More than 75% of all our activities involve the design and layout of museum depositories and archives. Moreover, Magista has been active in this sector for many years. So many of our storage systems were originally designed for museums. When you are designing or redesigning your museum depository, you can benefit considerably from the wealth of knowledge and experience that Magista has built up over the years.

The storage system you need

Every museum collection has its own specific storage requirements. Magista designs storage solutions for almost every situation. From light-proof to water-based storage, from vertical to horizontal or hanging … Magista’s storage systems keep your collection safe and comply with all the requirements of the Public Records Act. Amongst other things, this means that:

  • The Magista systems have been subjected to the Oddy test
  • We use low-acidity paints
  • The Magista systems have a consistently high level of finishing

Depository cabinets

Magista’s dust-free depository cabinets are available in both standard and non-standard sizes. Our cabinets are fitted with static or pull-out tableaus. In addition, drawers, special frames or other interiors can be installed. You also have plenty of choice when it comes to the doors. For example, you can choose from steel or glass doors, wing doors or sliding doors. Thanks to our extensive production facilities, all of our systems can be fully adapted to your depository’s specific requirements.

Depository shelving systems

If you already have a dust-free air-conditioned space for your depository, you can use Magista’s open shelving systems. Many solutions are possible. Such as frames, drawers or tableaus. We can also supply hanging, horizontal and vertical storage systems.

Most museum depositories have to make the most of the available space. After all, museum collections are always growing. However, it is not always possible to expand the depository. So when a depository is almost full, the solution often involves using the depository space more efficiently.

The advantages of mobile depository systems

The installation of mobile depository cabinets almost always creates a huge amount of extra space. After all, you always need walking space between static cabinets. But these walking spaces can be used for storage when you opt for a mobile system. In practice, the use of mobile depository cabinets usually enables you to realise double the storage space.

Note that if your depository ceiling is high enough, you may be able to build an extra layer of cabinets on top of the first layer. Combine this with the installation of mobile cabinets and your storage space is suddenly four times larger!

Mobile depository cabinets

With mobile depository cabinets, you create more storage space in your museum depository. Because the cabinets are rolled against each other, you can be assured that your collection is being stored safely. The objects are protected against dust and bright light.

Mobile depository shelving systems

If your depository space is kept dust-free and has the right climatological conditions, you can also use mobile (open) depository shelving systems. This is particularly attractive when you have extra height available for higher shelving systems. Because you can then more than double your depository’s storage space.

Magista: safe storage for museums

Magista’s cabinets, racks and other storage solutions comply with the requirements of the Public Records Act. In other words: we use low-acidity paints. Moreover, our products for museums have also passed the Oddy test. So our products do not emit any substances that can damage the stored collection.

Painting frames

Magista specialises in storage solutions for museums. The storage of paintings is a ‘hot item’ for museums. After all, the numbers of paintings in storage are increasing all the time and many museum depositories are bursting at the seams. So there is a real need for new ways of storing paintings efficiently and safely. Magista is using its knowledge and experience to help museums solve their storage problems. Amongst other things, with extremely practical painting frames.

Painting frames with a large capacity

Magista’s painting frames are a handy way of storing the paintings in your collection. The paintings are suspended from the frames, almost completely ruling out the chance of damage. The racks are available in various sizes, including heights of over 2 metres (and every possible width, in principle).

To give you an example of the storage capacity: a painting frame with 20 frames of 2×3 metres provides a ‘hanging surface’ of 120 m2. Yet, this frame only takes up around 10 m2 of floor area. You can store around 100 paintings of 1×1 metres in this frame.

A well thought-out solution

A painting frame is mounted in a self-supporting structure that is independent of the building in which it is installed. So Magista painting frames can be installed almost everywhere. No profiles need to be installed in the floor or ceiling. So the installation of the painting frame has a minimal impact on your building. Moreover, there are no rails or profiles that can cause problems when transporting your paintings on trolleys.

Needless to say, the painting frames can be professionally finished according to your specifications. In every possible RAL colour. For the storage of heavier paintings, the structure of the painting frame can be reinforced or adapted, if necessary.

Planocabinets

For your costly maps, drawings and prints, horizontal storage is the safest solution. With a Magista Planocabinet, you have a free, low-light location in which to store large sheets. And when we say large, we mean large. The drawers for the Magista Planocabinet are available in standard widths of up to three metres. Needless to say, we can also supply larger sizes, if you wish.

Options, options

There are many standard options available for the Magista Planocabinet:

  • The top can be fitted with a top deck in metal, wood or glass
  • Available with doors and/or rear wall
  • Can be used individually or linked
  • Adjustable feet to compensate for uneven floors
  • Available in static and mobile variants

Member of the Image-Line family

Magista’s Planocabinets are constructed from the high-quality components in the popular Image-Line cabinet series. They are available in a number of standard widths, up to a maximum of three metres. So that most museums find them ideal for storing drawings, maps and prints.

Do you have larger sheets in your collection? In that case, we can customise the Planocabinet to meet your specific needs. Then, in principle, you are free to choose the height, width and depth that you need. Safe storage

Drawings, maps and prints are the most fragile storage objects that need to be stored. After all, paper is very sensitive to humidity, light and harmful substances in the atmosphere. So it is then good to know that Magista’s storage solutions, including its Planocabinets, comply with the requirements laid down in the Dutch Public Records Act. That means that our Planocabinets cause no emissions of harmful substances and that we varnish them using low-acidity paints. Moreover, our products comply with the Oddy test.
